Haryana runs a kanal–marla–sarsahi ladder — 8 kanal to the acre, 20 marla to the kanal, 9 sarsahi to the marla — with both the pucca and kachha bigha still appearing in older revenue records. Because kanal and marla are exact fractions of an acre and the bighas are not, the two systems do not line up: a bigha is not a whole number of kanal, and a holding recorded in both is worth reading off the record rather than converting.
Every factor on this page is an exact fraction of an acre or of the surveyor's chain the unit was defined by, not a rounded decimal copied from a table — so the sub-units divide their parent unit evenly, which is the check that catches a wrong figure.
